SANUSI: ‘TINUBU DIDN’T STAND IN MY WAY’

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the new Emir of Kano, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu did not stand in the way of his reinstatement by the Kano State government.

According to Sanusi, the President resisted the pressure of using federal might to stand in the way of his reinstatement and instead, chose to ensure law and order was maintained in Kano State.

It will be recalled that Sanusi was reinstated on Friday as the Emir of Kano by Governor Abba Yusuf after signing the new Kano Emirate Council Law 2024 following the repeal of the Emirate Council Law put in place by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje by the State House of Assembly.

Speaking on what transpired in Kano State, which led to his reinstatement, Sanusi said President Tinubu recognised that the Kano saga was a local matter and resisted all pressure to interfere or use federal might.

Speaking in a recent interview, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said: “As you know, I was appointed the 14th Emir of the single emirate of Kano in June 2014 and now I am reappointed as the Emir of the single emirate of Kano.

“I would also like to express my thanks to his excellency Alhaji Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu without whose principled stance of non-interference in the internal affairs of the state, this would not have been possible.

“The president has shown that he is a respecter of the constitution and the separation of powers, he recognises that this is a purely local matter and that the government has a responsibility to do what is right for the state.

“I’m aware that he has resisted all pressure to get the federal government to be involved.

“This for me is a continuation of service that I started, it is also an opportunity God has given me to improve on my previous tenure.”

Meanwhile, Former Emir Ado Bayero is set to join Sanusi at the main palace with battalion of soldiers.

It was reported that there is palpable tension in Kano State as the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, is set to return to the main palace located in the city.

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, currently resides in the main palace and held the first palace court sitting on Saturday morning.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) appeared on a horse with a royal umbrella, which signifies his status as the Emir.

However, the deposed monarch’s motorcade is being readied to move him to the main palace and ascend the throne with the help of security agents.

It will be recalled that the Emir who was deposed alongside emirs of Rano, Bichi, Karaye and Gaya by the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, after the repeal of Emirates Council Law, returned to the city in the early hours of Saturday.

Governor Abba Yusuf had earlier ordered the deposed emirs to vacate official residences and hand over properties to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Despite the directive, Ado Bayero returned to Kano and moved into a mini palace in Nassarawa, a development that led to the governor calling for his arrest.

However, the state Police Command vowed to obey the court order against Sanusi’s reinstatement as the Emir of Kano.

However, battalion of soldiers has been deployed to the mini-palace, where Ado Bayero is currently situated, although the reason for the additional troops is unclear.

The situation remains volatile, with security operatives maintaining a heavy presence in the area.

In another development, Traditional rulers in the Northern region of the country, under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Saad Abubakar. have broken their silence over the Kano Emirate tussle.

The northern rulers in a statement signed by the Emir of Gummi and chairman coordinating committee, Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC), Justice Lawal Hassan Gummi, called for caution in the circumstances surrounding the Kano Emirate saga.

The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, had reinstated Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, based on an Emirate Bill passed into law by the State House of Assembly.

However, the dethroned Emir of Kano, the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has insisted on remaining in office based on a court order that ordered all parties to maintain the status quo.

Bayero returned to Kano after Governor Yusuf had declared Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano, sparking tension in the ancient city.

Amidst the controversy generated by this development, the northern traditional rulers’ council called for “restraint on the part of the disputants in the interest of peace and stability moreso as the matter has reportedly gone to court and is therefore sub-judice.”

The council prays for peace to reign in Kano and Nigeria at large.
