CONTROVERSY OVER TOPE ALABI’S ACTION

A dramatic controversy unfolded at Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin’s lavish birthday celebration when renowned gospel musician Tope Alabi refused to perform, returned her fee, and left the venue abruptly.

The incident has sparked intense debates on social media, with many speculating about the reasons behind Alabi’s actions.

According to Oreofe Williams, a filmmaker and media scholar who helped facilitate the performance, Tope Alabi was approached weeks prior by Lateef Anjorin, Lizzy’s husband, to surprise “someone he cherishes a lot.” However, the identity of the celebrant was kept hidden throughout negotiations. Williams revealed that the Alabis agreed to slash their performance fee by 70%, accepting N2.5 million instead of their usual rate.

Upon arriving at the venue and discovering the event was for Lizzy Anjorin, Tope Alabi and her team reportedly felt misled and opted to leave immediately without performing.

Her husband and manager, Soji Alabi, informed Williams of their decision, citing a lack of transparency and feeling “deceived.”

Bukky Jesse shared her opinion on the incident, suggesting that Tope Alabi’s decision may have been influenced by her relationship with Funke Akindele, who is not on good terms with Lizzy Anjorin. Jesse praised Lizzy for her understanding and wisdom in handling the situation.

On the other hand, Jumoke Oluropo Owoola, a poet, journalist and a community advocate, criticized Tope Alabi’s professionalism, stating that her decision to leave without performing was insincere and unprofessional.

The controversy has turned what was meant to be a joyful celebration into an ongoing public debate, raising questions about professionalism, personal convictions, and the complex intersection of faith and fame in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
