Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed his desire to return to university after retiring from active politics, reaffirming his lifelong passion for education and human capital development.
Atiku made this known while delivering a keynote address at the graduation and prize-giving ceremony of Pacesetters’ Schools, Abuja, where 205 students graduated as part of the Class of 2025. The event was held on Sunday in the nation’s capital.
Reflecting on his own educational journey and contributions, the former Vice President noted that his belief in education led him to establish a nursery and primary school, then a secondary school, and eventually the American University of Nigeria (AUN).
He described education as “the master key” to unlocking Nigeria’s vast potential and emphasized that investment in human capital is the most valuable contribution any government or individual can make. He commended the founder of Pacesetters Schools, Barrister Kenneth Imansuangbon, for his commitment to quality education and national development.
“There’s no better investment than education,” Atiku said. “It empowers individuals to become whatever they aspire to be—doctors, engineers, or leaders. I commend Pacesetters for their noble efforts and encourage them to consider expanding into university-level education.”
He also spoke about the importance of properly funding education and promoting a curriculum that includes entrepreneurship, stressing that an informed and educated population is essential for unity and national progress.
Atiku shared a personal story about his time in secondary school in 1961 when teachers from the U.S. Peace Corps filled a gap left by departing British staff. That experience, he said, inspired him to adopt the American curriculum in the schools he established.
During the ceremony, Barr. Kenneth Imansuangbon reiterated the school’s mission to raise independent and innovative young people who are equipped to contribute positively to society rather than rely on government jobs.
Other dignitaries present at the event included Senator Augustine Akobundu (Abia Central), Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal (wife of the Zamfara State governor), and former Labour Party National Chairman, Dan Nwanyanwu.
A special highlight of the event was a recognition award presented to Mrs. Elizabeth Imansuangbon, mother of the school’s chairman, in honour of her support and legacy.
