TUNJI BANJO: NIGERIA’S EX-MIDFIELDER

Tunji Babajide Banjo was born on February 19, 1960 in Kensington, London, to a Yoruba father and an Irish mother. He began his football journey playing for Brent and Middlesex London Schools, eventually joining the Leyton Orient FC reserves at the age of 17.

Banjo made two substitute appearances early in his career, including a 3–0 loss to Arsenal in the 1978 FA Cup semifinal. He made his full first-team debut in a 3–0 victory over Burnley, and though he only made 27 league appearances for Leyton Orient, his standout performance came in a 2–2 draw away at Fulham FC in 1979, where he played the full 90 minutes and scored his only goal for the club.

In 1982, Banjo moved to AEL Limassol in Cyprus, but an ankle injury prevented him from making any appearances, halting the progression of his football career.

Internationally, Banjo represented Nigeria, earning seven caps between 1981 and 1982. He debuted in a 2–0 win against Tunisia in 1981, and later featured in home and away fixtures against Tanzania, Guinea, and Algeria.

After retiring from professional football, Tunji Banjo returned to London, where he now works as a locomotive pilot.
