In an interview with News Central TV, Obasanjo said that while he was being held in Jos prison, the son of then Head of State General Sani Abacha died in a plane crash. He stated that he wrote a letter of condolence to Abacha from prison despite the fact that Abacha was the one who imprisoned him.
Obasanjo said that even after Abacha died, he also wrote a condolence letter to his wife from prison. He said anyone who describes him as vindictive does not understand his character. In Obasanjo’s words: “Abacha put me in prison, when his son died in a plane crash I wrote him a letter of condolence. I was still then in Jos prison. The prison superintendent came to me and said, ‘You have written a letter of condolence, this is the man who put you in prison, or don’t you remember?’ If I am vindictive I won’t do that. Even when he died I wrote his wife a letter of condolence before I was released. So anybody who talks of me as vindictive his head would need to be examined”.
