BEHOLD, THE GREATEST JUJU ALBUM IN HISTORY BY JAIYEOLA AJASA

Released in 1972 on Decca Records, “Board Members” by Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey and His International Brothers is a landmark Juju music album that cemented his superstar status in Nigeria. The track is known for its intricate guitar work, layered talking drums, and praise-singing, celebrating influential, high-profile figures of Lagos social life.

The album, released during Nigeria’s oil boom, evokes nostalgia, representing a “golden age” of Nigerian social life. It is a prime example of Obey’s style, blending traditional Yoruba music with modern highlife influences.

More than 50 years later, the album is still regarded as a classic for its rich, rhythmic composition and lyrical depth.

We see the freshness of an evergreen album. Lyrics, rhythm, throbbing percussion, beautiful singing and sheer joy of performance point to a classic. In “Board Members,” a praise song to wealthy Lagos socialites, he turned the roll call of members and the executives of the Association into a very powerful song

Board Members marked a pivotal moment in Obey’s career, establishing him as a leader in the Nigerian music scene.
