CELEBRATING ICONIC AGU

Chiwetalu Agu, a Nollywood veteran, is celebrating his birthday today, marking another milestone for one of the most iconic figures in the industry.

Born in 1956 in Enugu State, Nigeria, Agu has grown into one of the most recognizable actors in the Nigerian film industry, widely loved for his comic roles and his unique delivery of Igbo proverbs, witty expressions, and street slangs that have made him a household name across the country.

Before the boom of Nollywood movies in the early 1990s, Agu had already begun building his acting career through television productions on the Nigerian Television Authority Enugu.

He appeared in popular TV dramas such as Ikoro, Baby Come Now, and Ripples, where his performances helped establish his reputation as a talented and versatile actor.

Over the decades, Chiwetalu Agu has featured in more than 150 films, blending humor with cultural storytelling. Some of his notable works include Across the Niger, The Maidens, The Ghost and the Tout, The Wedding Party 2, Ordinary Fellows, Ada Omo Daddy, and The Trade. His distinctive acting style and memorable comic lines have made him one of the most beloved actors in the industry.

In recognition of his talent, he won the 2012 Nollywood Movie Award for Best Actor in an Indigenous Movie (Non-English Speaking Language) for his role in Nkwocha. He has also received nominations from major award bodies including the Africa Movie Academy Awards and the Zulu African Film Academy Awards.

Beyond the screen, the veteran actor is a devoted family man. He is married to his wife, Nkechi, and they are blessed with five children — three sons and two daughters.
