FALCONS TIPPED TO WIN NATIONS CUP

Nigeria Football Federation President, Ibrahim Gusau has tipped the Super Falcons to win the 2025 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The tournament is expected to kick off from July 5 to July 26.

South Africa are the defending champions of the competition after they defeated the hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final in 2022.

Nigeria is the most successful nation in the history of the competition since it became full-scale in 1998, winning 11 of the 14 editions.

The Super Falcons have also made it to at least the semi-final in every tournament they have played.

Gusau has revealed that the federation is doing everything possible to ensure that the Super Falcons reclaim the trophy in Morocco.

He said: “My projection is that we are going to get back our trophy because as far as I’m concerned that trophy belongs to Nigeria and that’s why we are not taking any chances.

“Every single FIFA window we will give them the opportunity to have a quality friendly match.

“Before the WAFCON I think we have about two windows which we intend to make sure that we utilise them effectively to make sure they have good preparation.

“As I’ve said we are trying to see how we can inject young girls from our local league which we feel are going to bring a lot of positive impact into the team.

“That’s why we had the friendly match with Algeria in Lagos and Ikenne which helped us to get some of these girls and inject them with the foreign-based which gave us the result we had against France (2-1 defeat to France in friendly game) because about seven of the home girls were injected into the Super Falcons and we were able to get the result.”

The Super Falcons will battle it out with Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana in Group B.

The 2022 edition of the tournament was the first edition with 12 teams, the 2025 edition is expected to keep the new format.

Nigeria’s last trophy in the competition was in 2018 under the tutelage of Thomas Dennerby.
