MASSIVE SOLIDARITY FOR SPEAKER  MERANDA

Drama unfolded at the Lagos State House of Assembly today as lawmakers and staff resisted an attempt by the Department of State Security (DSS) to shut down the chamber.

The DSS had sealed off the chamber for several hours, but at 12:25 pm, irate staff forced their way in, chanting solidarity songs.

The situation was chaotic, but lawmakers remained resolute, deciding to sit in the chamber anyway. By 12:45 pm, they had formed a quorum and commenced plenary for the day.

The tension was palpable, with Speaker Mojisola Meranda seen sobbing intermittently and wiping away tears.

This development comes after the recent impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed by lawmakers over allegations of fraud.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has been thrown into chaos following an invasion by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police. The lawmakers have strongly condemned the act, describing it as a “rape of democracy, an aberration, and a national embarrassment”.

During the melee, a lawmaker, Yinka Esho, was rushed to the hospital for treatment. The Assembly, however, continued with its plenary session, with 36 members in attendance.

The House has demanded an explanation from the Lagos State Director of DSS for the invasion.

The lawmakers have also called on the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to investigate the incident and brief the public on the outcome.

Furthermore, they have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene immediately and prevent a deeper crisis.

The invasion is believed to be connected to the recent removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who has challenged his removal in court.

The situation remains tense, with the Assembly’s workers clashing with security agents in a show of loyalty to the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.

A member, Abiodun Tobun, said, “This is not government by barrels of gun. This is an aberration of democracy. Bringing in anarchy, that is what they have done today. It is a total embarrassment and harassment.

“Nobody can dictate to us. God chooses and removes leaders.”

“We are solidly behind your leadership, Mr. Speaker. Nobody can remove you.”

However, members of the House of Assembly were unanimous on their stance, as they suspected the involvement of some powerful, influential individuals and groups in the whole saga.
