Speaking during an interview on ARISE TV NewsNight on Thursday, 23rd April, 2026 at 9.30PM, Mr. Ebuebu addressed the controversy surrounding a formal notice issued by the NBC on April 17, 2026 which warned broadcast stations and presenters against violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
The DG was clear that the notice was not an assault on press freedom, but a firm reminder that broadcasting in Nigeria must be guided by professionalism, fairness and neutrality. He emphasized that presenters and anchors are free to ask questions, solicit opinions and deliver balanced commentaries but must never state personal opinions as facts, bully guests, deny fair hearing or pass judgment on matters pending before the courts.
Mr. Ebuebu also stressed that editorial responsibility lies with the broadcaster, not with invited guests. Broadcast stations are required to verify and substantiate serious allegations before airing them, as unverified claims risk breaching the Code and exposing stations to libel and slander liability.
On sanctions, the DG outlined the Commission’s structured enforcement process under Classes A, B and C noting that licensees are always given the opportunity to respond and present their case before any final action is taken.
Mr. Ebuebu maintained that the NBC’s mandate is to uphold standards that protect both journalists and the public interest, while ensuring full compliance with the 1999 Nigerian Constitution and Nigeria’s international human rights obligations. The NBC remains committed to a broadcasting environment where freedom and responsibility go hand in hand.
