The Director General, Mr. Charles Ebuebu, attended the 10th Year Anniversary Lecture of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Radio Service (AFNRS) on July 31, 2025. Represented by Mrs. Gloria Makinde, Secretary to the Commission, Mr. Ebuebu highlighted AFNRS’s strategic role in countering misinformation and insecurity.
He stated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria Radio Service, which began transmission on May 22, 2025, was not merely another radio station but a strategic response to a critical challenge: how to communicate the truth in an era of widespread misinformation and growing national insecurity.
Mr. Ebuebu affirmed that the theme of the 10th Anniversary Lecture, “The Role of Broadcasting in Counter-Insurgency Operations: Armed Forces of Nigeria Radio Service in Perspective,” was highly appropriate, as it highlights the vital role of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Radio Service. He noted that the station was established on the recognition that modern warfare is no longer waged with weapons alone, but also through narratives, perceptions, and control of the information space.
“As regulators and security stakeholders, we must all acknowledge that broadcasting is not a neutral terrain in times of conflict. It is, in fact, one of the most consequential spaces in the conduct of modern warfare,” he stressed.
Highlighting the value of AFNRS, Mr. Ebuebu noted that the station has demonstrated how a well-managed frequency can go beyond informing the public, it can serve as a tool for national defense. He further acknowledged the efforts of the military, commending their dual role in securing both the nation’s borders and its narrative. “You defend our borders with honour, but through stations like 107.7 FM, you defend our national narrative. That is a battle we must never cede,” he concluded.
The Guest Lecturer, Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, stressed the power of media, particularly radio, in shaping public opinion and raising public consciousness.
The event had in attendance His excellency, the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar CON, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Amb. Gabriel Aduda; the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. CG Musa OFR; Representatives of the Service Chiefs, Directors General of Federal Agencies, amongst others.
The event celebrated AFNRS’s decade-long contribution to national security and broadcasting.
