In a concerted effort to bolster transparency and integrity within Nigeria’s broadcasting sector, the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), held a sensitization seminar for members of the NBC Board of Management on Tuesday at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The seminar was convened to deepen the Board’s understanding and readiness for the implementation of the 2024 Ethics and Integrity Compliance Scorecard (EICS), a key evaluative tool used to promote institutional integrity across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
In his opening address, the Director General of the NBC, Mr. Charles Ebuebu, welcomed participants and underscored the importance of ethical leadership in the Commission’s regulatory mandate. “This engagement is not only timely but critical in reinforcing the core values that should guide our actions and decisions as custodians of the nation’s broadcasting standards,” he stated.
Representing the ICPC Chairman, Mr. Olusegun B. Adigun, fsi, delivered a goodwill message in which he expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage with the NBC. He praised the initiative as a reflection of shared commitment to transparency and accountability, urging the Board to remain proactive in the collective fight against corruption.
The seminar featured two thematic presentations. The first, titled “Whistle-Blowing as a Preventive Tool in Fighting Corruption in MDAs,” was delivered by Mr. Clement Obaniyi. He highlighted the power of whistle-blowing as a preventive mechanism, detailing its various forms, identifying areas of vulnerability within MDAs, and emphasizing the role of ACTU in creating a culture of openness and accountability.
The second presentation, “Achieving Zero Tolerance for Fraud and Corruption in MDAs,” was delivered by Mr. Chidi Orji. He provided a critical analysis of the impact of corruption on national development, with specific reference to the public service and regulatory bodies. Mr. Orji also outlined practical strategies for minimizing fraud and maintaining institutional credibility.
Members of the NBC Board of Management expressed appreciation for the insightful presentations, describing the seminar as both enlightening and essential. They reiterated their commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethics, transparency, and good governance in the discharge of the Commission’s responsibilities.
The event marks a significant milestone in the NBC’s ongoing efforts to entrench a zero-tolerance culture for corruption and to lead by example in the Nigerian public service.
