Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor of Abia State, has revealed that he gave over $1 million to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and N500 million to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the party’s inception in 1998.
Kalu made the disclosure during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, where he shared insights into Nigeria’s political history and current challenges.
“At the time, the dollar was $84. I gave President Olusegun Obasanjo over $1 million. I also gave the PDP more than N500 million to help start the party,” Kalu said.
He explained that only a few individuals had the financial capacity to support the formation of the PDP back then, mentioning TY Danjuma and Atiku Abubakar as others who could contribute. “Others had no money to bring. That is the truth,” he added.
Speaking more broadly, Kalu emphasized the need for unity among political figures and called for an end to the constant public attacks on prominent leaders.
“All this abusing Tinubu, abusing Orji Kalu, abusing Atiku Abubakar, abusing Amaechi should stop,” he said. “What we need to do is sit down as a family, talk about the needs of Nigerians, and deliver.”
The senator also stressed his concern for the welfare of ordinary citizens, stating his desire to see Nigerians enjoy basic comforts like regular meals, good roads, functional train stations, and well-paying jobs.
“I’m more anxious to see Nigerians eating three meals a day, going on good roads, working in decent factories, and making decent money,” he said.
