OSIHMEN EQUALS ODEGBAMI’S FEAT

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen has made history by equalling Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami on the all-time Super Eagles scorers list, reaching an impressive total of 23 goals.

The 25-year-old striker achieved this milestone during Nigeria’s recent AFCON 2025 qualifying match against Benin Republic, where he was crucial in securing a 1-1 draw for the team.

In a match held at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria faced an early setback when Benin took a surprise lead after a mistake by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Despite missing two earlier chances, Osimhen proved his mettle by rising above defenders to head home the equaliser in the 81st minute, showcasing his aerial prowess and determination.

This goal not only salvaged a point for Nigeria but also marked a significant personal achievement for Osimhen, who now shares second place with Odegbami in the Super Eagles’ all-time scoring chart.

Remarkably, he reached this historic tally in just 37 appearances, positioning himself to chase the record held by Rashidi Yekini, who sits atop the list with 37 goals.

Following the match, Osimhen expressed his commitment to continuing his scoring run as Nigeria prepares for their final qualifying game against Rwanda.

With this draw, the Super Eagles secured their spot as Group D winners with 11 points, having sealed  their qualification for AFCON 2025 in Morocco without kicking a ball.

Osimhen’s impressive form and ability to perform under pressure have solidified his status as one of Nigeria’s key players as they aim for success in the upcoming tournament.

His journey from a promising talent to a historic scorer exemplifies his dedication and skill on the international stage.
