OTEDOLA: MY FRIENDS LAUGHED AT ME

A billionaire businessman Femi Otedola has shared how he once sold diesel from door to door before he was able to build his oil and gas empire.

He explained that the journey into the energy sector started with very humble beginnings, long before his company, Zenon Oil, became a dominant force in Nigeria’s diesel market.

His story highlights the challenges he faced at the early stage of his business career and the determination that later positioned him as one of the country’s leading entrepreneurs.

Femi Otedola revealed that during those days, he went around personally selling diesel, sometimes being ridiculed by people who did not understand his vision.

Despite the challenges and mockery, he remained focused on his responsibilities as a husband and father, ensuring that he could take care of his family and provide for their needs.

This sense of responsibility, he explained, was a major motivation that pushed him to endure the tough times while pursuing his business goals.

According to him, many of his peers saw his venture into diesel trading as unusual, especially since he had to directly deliver fuel to customers.
His friends often teased him whenever they met in social gatherings, joking about his work.

However, he kept his focus on the bigger picture and refused to allow the criticisms to deter him, instead, he took pride in the work because it was a stepping stone towards building something bigger.

Otedola explained that it was through persistence and commitment that he was able to establish Zenon Oil, a company that would later transform into a key player in the Nigerian downstream oil sector.

What started as door-to-door sales gradually expanded into a business operation that supplied diesel to major industries and businesses across the country.

His rise from those modest beginnings into the top ranks of Nigerian business underscores the importance of resilience in achieving success
He further shared that the business journey was not without sacrifices, as he had to put in long hours of work and endure the ridicule of those who looked down on his efforts, still, he believed strongly that honest hard work was never in vain.

His dedication to his trade eventually opened doors of opportunity, leading to business growth and expansion on a much larger scale.
Through his experience, Otedola highlighted that the challenges he faced did not define him but instead shaped his determination to succeed.

The lessons he gathered during those days of selling diesel played a crucial role in preparing him for the responsibilities of managing a much larger enterprise in the future.

His story serves as an account of how persistence can turn small beginnings into remarkable achievements.
Today, Femi Otedola stands as one of Nigeria’s most prominent businessmen, but he has not forgotten the journey that brought him there.

His reflection on those early days of selling diesel shows how determination, hard work, and the willingness to embrace humble beginnings can contribute to building a lasting legacy in business.

He said: “When we met at nightclubs on weekends, my friends would tease me with questions like, ‘Where’s your truck?’ They’d laugh when I walked in and ask, ‘Are you here to sell diesel?’ I took the wisecracks in stride. I didn’t feel that selling diesel was beneath me. I had my wife and children to look after; there were school fees to pay.”
