Musikilu Mojeed, the Editor-in-Chief of PREMIUM TIMES and one of Africa’s most respected investigative journalists, has been announced as a keynote speaker at the 2025 Communications Week (ComWEEK), hosted by the National Directorate of Social Communications of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN).
Scheduled for Wednesday, 28 May, in Abuja, this year’s ComWEEK focuses on the theme: “Media with Gentleness: Path to Being Narrators of Hope in a Distressed Nation.” The theme draws inspiration from Pope Francis’ 2025 World Communications Day message, which encourages sharing hope with gentleness.
Mr Mojeed will deliver a 45-minute lecture titled “The Power of Empathy in Media: Reporting on Vulnerable Communities.” Organisers say the presentation will explore the role of empathy in journalism, particularly in telling stories of vulnerable populations and addressing the ethical and professional challenges involved.
In the official invitation jointly signed by CSN Secretary General Michael Banjo and National Director of Social Communications Michael Umoh, Mr Mojeed was praised as a “renowned journalist and editor” whose depth of experience makes him a fitting voice on such a critical topic.
The event is expected to attract a broad audience including journalists, media executives, communication scholars, bloggers, and digital media influencers.
Organisers expressed hope that Mr Mojeed’s lecture would touch on themes such as sensitivity to Nigeria’s current socio-economic challenges, ethical storytelling practices, and strategies for reporting on marginalized communities with compassion and accuracy.
ComWEEK 2025 will also include a special tribute: a posthumous award in honour of the late Raymond Dokpesi, founder of DAAR Communications and a trailblazer in Nigeria’s media industry.
Also slated to speak at the event are Henry Nzekwu, Founder of Bridge Radio, Asaba, who will serve as Special Guest of Honour; Shuaibu Husseini, Managing Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB); George Ehusani, Executive Director of Lux Terra Leadership Foundation; and Bishop David Ajang, Chair of the CBCN Committee on Social Communications.
Mr Mojeed, who co-founded PREMIUM TIMES in 2011, is a multi-award-winning journalist known for his groundbreaking work on corruption, human rights, and human trafficking. A former Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University and Ford Foundation Fellow at The City University of New York, he has also served on prestigious juries such as the UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize.
His accolades include a shared Pulitzer Prize for his role in the Panama Papers investigation, the Global Shining Light Award, the FAIR Editor’s Courage Award, the Wole Soyinka Investigative Reporting Award, and the Data Journalism Award from the Global Editors Network, among others.
