SPEAKERSHIP: COURT ORDERS LAWMAKERS TO BE JOINED

The Lagos High Court, Ikeja division, has ordered that all members of the Lagos House of Assembly be joined as parties in the suit filed by Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

It will be recalled that the Lagos State House of Assembly leadership crisis took a fresh twist as 35 of the 40 lawmakers who are supporting the removal of the reinstated Speaker Mudashiru Obasa stormed the Lagos State High Court on the matter the embattled lawmaker had brought before the court.

Obasa is challenging his removal by 36 lawmakers in the state assembly on Monday, January 13.

In the application dated February 12, 2025, and filed by his lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, the impeached former speaker stated that he was removed from his position on January 13, 2025, by 36 lawmakers while he was out of the country.

As reported by Channels TV, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Tayo Oyetibo is leading Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Bimbo Akeredolu and other lawyers to represent Mojisola Meranda.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana is leading Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Muiz Banire and other counsels to-represent the 36 lawmakers, while Senior Advocates, Olu Daramola and Dada Awosika are representing other parties seeking to be joined in the suit.

However, in a significant turn of events, on Thursday, February 27, the ousted speaker of the Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, claimed that the current speaker of the House, Mojisola Meranda, had stepped down as the parliament leader.

Obasa revealed this on Thursday during an interview with Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today.

The embattled lawmaker said Meranda resigned at the peace meeting held at the Lagos House in Marina last weekend. Obasa stated: “At the meeting held in Marina, which saw the attendance of all party leaders, it was made clear, with hopes that all members were present, that Meranda herself declared her resignation. She made it known that she has stepped down.”

It was also reported that the political crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly took another twist as security details assigned to Obasa, the impeached Speaker, have been restored.

At the same time, the security personnel attached to his successor, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn, raising concerns about the unfolding power struggle. Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, 2025, is now poised to make a dramatic return to his former position following high-level interventions by key figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
