President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of new members to the governing councils of three major federal universities in Nigeria: the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
This development follows President Tinubu’s earlier decision in February 2025 to dissolve the UNIABUJA governing council and remove Vice-Chancellor Aisha Maikudi amid controversy over her appointment process. The move sparked national debate on the legality and procedure of university leadership appointments.
The newly appointed members reflect a commitment to regional representation, with selections drawn from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Prof. Rosemary Iriowen Egonmwan – South-South
Dr. Adedeji Adefuye – South-West
Prof. Sarki Abba Abdulkadir – North-West

These appointments are seen as part of the Tinubu administration’s broader agenda to strengthen governance and promote inclusivity in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
