TINUBU: IBB’S IMPRINTS LIVE WITH US

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday sent a historical message to former military ruler, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), as he marked his 84th birthday, wishing him warm felicitations and a sharp reminder of legacies that continue to shape Nigeria’s destiny.

In a statement signed by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the former Head of State’s decisive imprint on Nigeria’s socio-political and economic landscape, noting that Babangida’s eight years in power redefined governance in ways that still resonate today.

The President hailed Babangida’s illustrious military career-spanning his roles as an instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Commander of the 4 Reconnaissance Regiment, leader of the Army Armoured Corps, Director of Army Staff Duties and Plans, and later Chief of Army Staff-before rising to the nation’s highest office.

Tinubu underscored Babangida’s infrastructural legacy, particularly the construction of the iconic Third Mainland Bridge, and his sweeping reforms that liberalised Nigeria’s economy.

He also credited him with founding key national security institutions, including the State Security Service (SSS), the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Going further, Tinubu reminded Nigerians of Babangida’s bold political restructuring-creating new states and relocating the Federal Capital from Lagos to Abuja-a decision that permanently altered Nigeria’s geopolitical balance.

Beyond the celebrations, Tinubu’s message carried a deeper undertone: a salute to Babangida’s sacrifices, an acknowledgement of his enduring influence, and a subtle call to reflect on the continuity of Nigeria’s nation-building journey.
The President concluded with prayers for Babangida’s long life and renewed strength, invoking Almighty Allah’s blessings upon the elder statesman whose shadow still looms over Nigeria’s political history.
