In a candid interview with Chude Jideonwo, the “Johnny”crooner said curiosity initially led her to try smoking, but it soon became something she began to rely on before going to bed.
“When I was in university, I tried smoking. It just didn’t work for me. Before it didn’t work out, it worked out a bit too much. I started needing to smoke before I went to bed — I was getting addicted to that lifestyle,” she shared.
Yemi Alade admitted that although she kept the habit private, the secrecy made her realise it wasn’t something she wanted to continue.
“In public, I would hide the cigarettes, and I just told myself, if I have to hide to do something, I won’t do it. I like to be aware of my decisions,” she added.
The award-winning singer explained that she eventually quit smoking after realising the potential harm it could cause to her health and singing voice, noting that the entire phase lasted less than a year.
“Smoking for me didn’t last up to a year. I stopped because it wasn’t for me, and it could harm my voice,” she said.
Reflecting on her journey, Yemi Alade acknowledged that while temptations still arise , she has remained steadfast in her decision to stay away from smoking.
“Like every human being, sometimes the temptation comes, but I make strict rules for myself and stick to them,” she concluded.
