While many assume international gigs are the financial pinnacle for Nigerian artists, Afrobeats megastar Davido has revealed that staying home can sometimes be far more rewarding — at least financially.
In a recent podcast interview with an American host who expressed frustration over repeatedly failing to book him for a U.S. summer concert, the “Unavailable” hitmaker offered a candid explanation rooted in economics and demand.
“It’s not easy to leave Nigeria to perform abroad,” Davido said. “When you can get booked for $400,000 for a naming ceremony, it makes you think twice.”
He likened the experience to India’s elaborate celebration culture, where milestones such as weddings or naming ceremonies are grand, often celebrity-filled affairs.
“It’s like in India, where they celebrate everything. When you have money, the in-thing is to get a big artist your wife or kids like to perform live,” he added.
A Booming Domestic Market for Entertainment
Davido’s comments underscore a growing trend in Nigeria’s entertainment economy: the increasing willingness of the country’s affluent class to spend lavishly on private performances by A-list musicians. From birthdays to naming ceremonies, the local demand for top-tier talent has become a thriving,and often overlooked — revenue stream for artists.
For performers like Davido, the decision to prioritize high-paying local shows over international tours is not just about convenience, but smart financial planning in a rapidly evolving entertainment landscape.
