Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of shielding Nigeria’s political elite from justice, describing this as the president’s only notable achievement since assuming office.
In a video broadcast, the Grammy-nominated singer alleged that Tinubu’s harsh economic policies, which have worsened living conditions for millions of Nigerians, were implemented solely to protect corrupt political figures.
Kuti also took aim at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, over comments he made during a recent media chat. According to Kuti, Wike expressed frustration with the newly formed opposition coalition for attempting to disrupt what he called “the status quo.”
“Wike and the other politicians supporting Asiwaju [Tinubu] are fighting for the status quo,” Kuti said. “If you listen with a political ear, Wike was asking the opposition if they want to scatter it.”
He further claimed that Wike openly acknowledged Tinubu’s efforts in protecting the political class. “When I say ‘all of us’, I don’t mean ordinary Nigerians. I’m referring to the political class, the rich, crooked, and corrupt Nigerian elites,” Kuti said.
Referencing a claim from Wike’s media chat, Kuti stated, “Wike said that during Rotimi Amaechi’s tenure as governor of Rivers State, Amaechi’s wife was receiving N4 billion monthly. I just wish he mentioned how many years she got that money.”
Concluding his remarks, Kuti urged Nigerians to rethink the narrative that Tinubu has made tough decisions in the national interest. “The only thing the president has done is cover up crime after crime. And the bravery required to do that is nothing but wickedness,” he said. “He impoverished the whole country because in crime, something has been taken.”
