FUNKE’S FILM BIDS FAREWELL TO CINEMAS

The cinematic sensation, ‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ directed by FunkeAkindele, bid farewell to Nigerian cinemas after an extraordinary run, setting a new record with a staggering total gross of ₦1.4 billion.

Premiered on December 15, 2023, the film achieved a groundbreaking milestone in early January 2024, becoming the first Nollywood project to surpass ₦1 billion in box office revenue. Notably, it earned an impressive ₦113 million during its opening weekend.

The comedic storyline revolves around five financially challenged brothers who reluctantly venture into a life of crime to secure funds for their ailing mother’s medical treatment.

According to data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), after an 11-week run, ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ recorded a modest ₦14,745 in its final weekend, from screenings in just two locations between February 23 and February 25.

The film’s grand finale in theaters showcased a remarkable total gross of ₦1,404,207,541, accompanied by an impressive 374,552 ticket admissions. The success extended beyond Nigeria, with international screenings in countries such as Ghana, the United Kingdom, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Guinea, Rwanda, Senegal, and Togo.

FunkeAkindele now holds the top three positions in Nollywood’s highest-grossing films, with ‘Battle on Buka Street’ (₦668 million) securing second place and ‘Omo Ghetto: The Saga’ (₦636 million) claiming the third spot.

The remarkable performance of ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ cements Akindele’s legacy as a leading force in the Nigerian film industry.
