Retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has called on Nigerians to scrutinize the motives and track records of politicians rallying to form a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
In a recent video statement, Al-Mustapha acknowledged the potential value of a coalition that truly aims to reposition the country for good. However, he warned that such efforts must not be led by individuals with a history of embezzling public funds or contributing to Nigeria’s current socio-economic challenges.
“They are looking at me, and I’m looking at them, but there has been no contact,” he said, referring to alleged coalition plans involving notable opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi. “Asking party leaders to vacate their positions for others to take over is like armed robbery,” he added.
Al-Mustapha, who recently joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), expressed uncertainty over whether the party had been invited to participate in the coalition. He cautioned against secret political arrangements, warning they may lead to betrayal of national interests.
Commenting on Nigeria’s current economic woes, the former presidential candidate criticized the Tinubu-led administration for worsening living conditions. “Nigerians have never experienced this level of hardship,” he said. “If these leaders could tax the air, they would.”
While he did not confirm any personal political ambitions for 2027, Al-Mustapha emphasized that Nigerians are becoming more politically aware due to the prevailing hardships.
He also condemned any attempts to push the country towards a one-party system, stating such a move would be a grave offense and betrayal of democratic principles.
