NBC CHAMPIONS CLIMATE EDUCATION

The Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Mr. Charles Ebuebu, held a press conference on the 2025 World Radio Day, at the Edo Broadcasting Service Conference Room, Benin city, Edo State on Thursday, February 13, 2025.

In his presentation, the DG pointed out that Radio has always been a medium that reaches every corner of our country—from bustling cities to remote rural communities. He pointed out that it was the responsibility of the Media to use the Medium to raise awareness, educate citizens, and empower communities with the knowledge they need to adapt to a changing climate.

Mr. Ebuebu was excited to introduce the “Green Broadcasting Pledge” which is a public commitment that invites every Nigerian radio station and broadcaster to embrace sustainable broadcasting practices and to integrate climate awareness into their programming.

This pledge represents our collective effort to reduce environmental impact while championing climate education.

In his address, the Director-General outlined the core elements of a groundbreaking climate pledge, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The seven key components of the pledge are:Climate Awareness Programming, Eco-friendly Broadcasting Practices, Supporting Local Climate Solutions, Promotion of Eco-friendly Advertisements, Capacity Building in Climate Journalism, Implementation and Recognition, Monitoring and Evaluation

He stressed that the NBC’s “Green Broadcasting Pledge” is more than a commitment—it is a call to action. By integrating sustainable practices and robust climate education into our daily programming, which positions the radio as a vital player in the national and global fight against climate change.

In conclusion, Mr. Ebuebu emphasized the need to inspire our communities to build a greener, more resilient future together for Nigeria, as we lead by example.
