NBC DG ATTENDS IVERIFY PROJECT LAUNCH

The Director General,  National Broadcasting Commission, Mr Charles Ebuebu was last Wednesday 6th December, 2023, one of the guest speakers at the Public launch of iVerify Project of the International Press Center at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

The event which was the unveiling of the iVerify project on journalism practice is to strengthen the fight against fake news, information disorders, and misinterpretation of contents, that has caused a lot of proliferation in information dissemination in the society, especially the rate at which hate speech is being promoted during the electoral process.

The DG during a panel session, commended the International Press Center (IPC), UNDP and Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (aecid) for the initiative.

He noted that iVerify is a welcome development in the broadcast industry to promote credibility, accuracy and reliability in the dissemination of broadcast content.

According to the DG, the broadcast media and stakeholders have a key role to play in enhancing information integrity as it is empirical to national development; as the place of regulation of content cannot be over emphasized.

Mr. Ebuebu also stressed that the Commission is working towards reviewing the Nigeria Broadcasting Code to address issues in the broadcast and digital space, so as to ensure that information dissemination is done with utmost integrity.

On capacity building for broadcasters, the NBC Boss further noted that the Commission is setting up the Nigeria Broadcast Institute to help broadcasters in training and retraining to enable professionalism in the industry.

Other members of the panel include Mr. Chris Iziguzo, NUJ President, Maureen Chigbo, President GOCOP, Mr Ade Adesomoju Deputy Managing Editor, and Premium Times amongst others.
