NBC DISCUSSES THE INFLUENCE OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA

The Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Mr. Charles Ebuebu, in his remarks at the just concluded workshop, expressed his appreciation to the participants for attending the training and spoke on the rapidly changing media landscape, particularly the growing role of social media and its influence on elections.

He reminded participants that broadcast regulation is a collective responsibility of the Commission and not about individual positions.

Mr. Ebuebu pointed out gaps in social media monitoring and raised concerns about communication processes and institutional integrity, stressing the need for clearer procedures and stronger coordination among regulatory bodies.

In his presentation which focused on “Advanced AI in Broadcast Monitoring and Machine Learning Applications for Content Analysis”, the Director General explained that the use of AI and machine learning tools would help the Commission monitor content in real time, identify trends early and respond more quickly to violations.

He identified continuous training, clearer regulatory processes and a proactive approach to broadcast monitoring in line with the realities of today’s digital media space, as key to effective regulation.
