This has left many corps members frustrated and disappointed.
The Federal Government officially announced an increase in the NYSC monthly allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, effective from July 2024, in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had expressed his appreciation, noting that the raise would provide financial relief and motivate corps members.
However, the delay in implementing this new allowance for September has caused concern among corps members, who were anticipating the higher payment.
According to reports, not all corps members have received their allowances yet, but those who have were credited with the old ₦33,000 amount.
“They haven’t paid yet, but those around me who received theirs got ₦33,000 instead of the promised ₦77,000,” one corps member shared.
It will be recalled that the federal government had confirmed the increase in the NYSC allowance.
In a statement issued by Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, it was announced that the monthly stipend for corps members would be raised to ₦77,000, starting from July 2024, in line with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
The statement read: “The Federal Government has approved the increase of corps members’ monthly allowance to seventy-seven thousand naira (₦77,000), with effect from July 2024, in accordance with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.”
The delay in delivering the increased allowance has triggered anger on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter). Many Nigerians are expressing their frustration, as they had expected the NYSC allowance to rise folloFGwing President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of a new minimum wage of ₦70,000, fueling hopes that the corps members’ allowance would match the ₦77,000 figure.
The government’s inaction has led to widespread disappointment and outcry across the country.
