OMAWUMI: TRANSACTIONS EXISTED IN LOVE

Nigerian singer, Omawumi Boma Magbele, popularly known as Omawumi, has shared her perspective on how relationships have changed over time, pushing back against the idea that modern dating is more transactional.

Speaking during a podcast session with Pulse, the singer explained that exchanges in relationships are not new but have simply taken different forms across generations.

According to her, what people call “transactional” today existed in simpler ways in the past.

“I disagree. Because we women have had long throat since the beginning of time, you know, but our transactional was different because if it was all those like secondary school to uni days of holding hands or crushing on a girl or a boy, you know, you just stay there, buy them ice cream and popcorn. But now, it’s now iPhone”

She made this known while addressing the topic of relationship dynamics, where she argued that the concept is often misunderstood.

Omawunmi noted that mutual effort has always been part of how people relate with each other.

“There’s always been some level of transaction. So when you use the word transactional, you make it like, it’s so strong a word. If you are feeling somebody, like I always encourage that if I’m with a man that showers gifts on me and, you know, I always try to match that energy,” she opined.

She also spoke about how relationships are perceived, especially when it comes to women, stating that people tend to focus on what women receive, without noticing how they give back in other ways.

“But most people don’t see the women matching the energy. They just see the women only collecting. So men, they go overboard sometimes, just especially because some men tend to like shiny objects. And shiny objects, not the only one person they like. So everybody is struggling to get that shiny object.”

Addressing what she sees as a key issue in today’s relationships, she pointed to inconsistency.

Omowunmi explained that people often reduce their effort after the early stage of attraction, which can affect the relationship over time.

“And then when you finish getting it, then all the paparazzi that you were doing before, you will have to tone it down. No, now. You have to keep up the energy,” the singer added.
