SOUN PALACE CLEARS AIR ON OGBORI ELEMOSO

The Palace of the Soun of Ogbomosoland has issued a clarification over allegations surrounding the remaking of the Ogbori Elemoso narrative, following claims credited to Baba Lere Paimo.

In a press statement signed by the Media Assistant, Office of the Soun of Ogbomosoland, the Palace described the allegations as misleading and said clarification became necessary to forestall public misinformation and undue speculation.

According to the Palace, His Imperial Majesty had earlier engaged Baba Lere Paimo and informed him of plans to creatively remodel the history of Ogbomoso in line with global storytelling standards. The actor was reportedly invited to participate in the proposed movie project as a character and contributor, not as a copyright owner of the historical narrative.

The statement further disclosed that investigations confirmed the story in question is not copyrighted. It added that the movie currently in production bears a completely different title, expanded storyline, and a separate plot structure, though it draws inspiration from the history of Ogbomosoland.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Baba Lere Paimo was offered the sum of ₦7.5 million, an amount significantly higher than what was offered to other participants,” the statement said, noting that the offer was strictly for participation and not for the purchase of copyright.

The Palace emphasized that no individual can claim exclusive ownership or copyright over the history of a town, describing history as dynamic and belonging to the public domain.

It also confirmed that Baba Lere Paimo had previously shared his version of the Ogbori Elemoso story during earlier engagements, stressing that the forthcoming movie, scheduled for release next year, is a creative production with a new name and original storyline.

While stating that the matter does not constitute a legal case, the Palace said the clarification was necessary to correct misconceptions and set the record straight.
