Speaking at a recent event in Abuja, Jonathan emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s democratic diversity and the need for fair political competition.
Jonathan’s remarks come amid rising concerns over alleged efforts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to consolidate power at the expense of opposition parties.
Critics have highlighted recent actions, including reported interference in electoral processes and strategic appointments, which they argue are designed to weaken political rivals.
Jonathan stated that “Nigeria is too complex for a one-party system,” pointing to the nation’s rich ethnic and regional diversity.
He warned that manipulative practices might yield short-term benefits but ultimately erode trust and exacerbate divisions within society.
Jonathan referenced historical attempts at political dominance that failed to suppress Nigeria’s enduring democratic spirit, saying “you cannot get one-party state by manipulation.”
The warning follows Jonathan’s earlier calls for Tinubu to embrace inclusive governance, reflecting broader anxieties about a shrinking democratic space as the country gears up for future elections. Opposition leaders have echoed these concerns, accusing the APC of utilizing state resources to marginalize competitors and stifle dissenting voices.
As of now, Tinubu’s administration has not provided a direct response to Jonathan’s comments. However, APC representatives have previously dismissed such criticisms, asserting their commitment to democratic principles.
