NBC TRAINS STAFF ON FOI

As part of its ongoing commitment to institutional modernization and open governance, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has commenced a two-day intensive capacity-building training for staff of its Freedom of Information (FOI) Unit.

The training, held at the Bayview Hotel, Enugu, from March 18th to 19th, 2026, is themed: “Freedom of Information: A Tool for Transparency and Accountability.”

The programme is strategically designed to deepen the expertise of FOI Unit officers in implementing the Freedom of Information Act, 2011. By enhancing participants’ understanding of the public’s right to access statutory records, the Commission aims to further streamline its response mechanisms and uphold the highest standards of public service.

In her opening remarks, the Head of Legal at the NBC, Barr. Nwanneka Odoeme, expressed profound appreciation to the Director-General, Mr. Charles Ebuebu, for his unwavering support of specialized staff training. She noted that such initiatives are vital for ensuring the Commission remains a transparent and accountable regulatory body.

“I encourage all participants to engage deeply with these sessions,” Barr. Odoeme stated. “Mastering FOIA principles is not just a legal requirement; it is a fundamental part of our duty to the Nigerian public.

This training will empower our staff to discharge their responsibilities with greater precision and efficiency.”

The training features expert presentations delivered by resource persons from the Federal Ministry of Justice, focusing on the practical application of FOI laws within government institutions. These sessions are followed by interactive question and answer segments to address contemporary challenges in information management and public disclosure.

By investing in the continuous professional development of its legal and administrative staff, the NBC continues to reinforce its identity as a forward thinking regulator dedicated to the principles of democratic accountability.
