ODUNLADE: WE OWE THE LEGENDS A LOT

Renowned Nollywood actor and director, Odunlade Adekola, has built a stellar career with over 100 film appearances, earning a reputation for both excellence and integrity.

In a recent chat, he spoke about the rise of indigenous storytelling, the importance of cultural preservation, and how he balances his professional and personal life.

According to Odunlade, the Nigerian film industry is experiencing a much-needed shift.

“There’s no better time than now to focus on indigenous films,” he says. “We owe a lot to the legends who paved the way. These stories reflect our culture deeply and are now gaining international recognition. It’s exciting to see the world appreciating our roots.”

He emphasizes that the industry is finally getting the spotlight it deserves:

“For years, it was mostly the music industry getting the accolades. But now, our films are drawing global attention, especially the ones that promote local content. That’s exactly what I set out to do. There’s progress, but also room for growth as production techniques evolve daily.”

On the issue of younger Nigerians, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, being distanced from their roots, Odunlade remains optimistic.

“Culture is a part of life—you can’t separate the two. Sooner or later, they will embrace it. Parents also have a role to play: introduce your children to cultural experiences, take them on historical tours, and encourage them to watch cultural films like Ajakaju. That’s how appreciation grows.”

Odunlade’s consistent involvement in indigenous productions isn’t just a preference—it’s strategic.

“As a filmmaker, you must know your audience. Once you stop delivering value, you lose relevance. I connect easily and genuinely with indigenous stories—they resonate with people.”

Describing the Nigerian movie industry, Odunlade notes both its strengths and its needs.

“Nollywood is growing rapidly, but there’s potential for more. What we need is an enabling environment. If the government invests in the industry and fights piracy effectively, we’ll see even greater strides—just like in Hollywood or Bollywood.”

Having starred in numerous films, Odunlade avoids picking a favorite.

“Each role challenges me in a new way. I always strive to raise the bar professionally. That mindset makes every project stand out in its own right.”

Despite his busy schedule, Odunlade remains deeply committed to his family.

“I’m grateful to God for my family—especially my wife. When your home is at peace, everything else flows. My family is truly my strength.”

As a devout Christian, Odunlade explains how he navigates roles that may not align with his personal values.

“My work is separate from my faith. I’m a professional, and I play assigned roles. But let’s be clear: being spiritual is different from being religious. Spirituality helps you see things from a divine perspective.”

In an industry known for drama on and off screen, Odunlade has remained grounded.

“It’s about the fear of God and self-discipline. Temptations are always there, but with prayer and a strong spiritual foundation, you can overcome them.”
