SENATE SUMMONS MARWA OVER SENATOR

The Senator Godswill Akpabio-led senate has summoned the Chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, General Buba Marwa over an allegation against Senator Oyelola Ashiru.

The Senate took the matter after rising from a closed-door session that started at 11.49 am and ended at 1.25 pm on Tuesday, October 22.

It will be recalled that NDLEA said he senator’s house in Ilorin, Kwara state, was raided and consignment of drugs recovered.

The anti-narcotic agency stated that three of Ashiru’s aides were arrested, prosecuted and sentenced, including, one sent to jail in June 2024.

The Senate has set up a six-member panel to invite all those involved in the accusation raised by NDLEA against Senator Ashiru.

The federal lawmaker, who is Deputy Senate Leader is elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is the senator representing Kwara South.

Ashiru, who said he neither takes alcohol nor take carbonated drinks except water, pleaded that the matter must be taken very seriously.

The chairman of the panel is Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South) while members are Senator Kaka Shehu (APC, Borno Central); Senator Ede Dafinone (APC, Delta Central); Senator Ireti Kingibe (Labour Party, FCT); Senator Afolabi Shauibu (APC, Ogun Central); and Senator Lawal Usman (PDP, Kaduna Central).

It was earlier reported that Senator Ashiru fired back at the NDLEA after he was accused of harbouring drugs at home.

Senator Ashiru questioned who has been charged to court since the anti-narcotic agency found such an exhibit at his home.

The federal lawmaker then called on the NDLEA to take its time to fish out the bad eggs within rather than doing a media trial.
