Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has recalled how she lost an endorsement deal because she refused to go on a Dubai trip with the owner of a company.
Tiwa, who spoke in a panel organised by Entertainment Week Africa, shared her perspective on the demand for sex from female artistes in exchange for opportunities.
She recalled that this is one of the major challenges the female folk face in the Nigerian music industry.
Tiwa stated that losing the endorsement after refusing to go on the trip with the company owner made her realise that such executives place value on her body and not her talent.
“I had been told that if I don’t go and see ‘this chairman’ personally, I would not be put on a show. I lost an endorsement because I refused to go to Dubai with a man who is one of the owners of the company.
“That was when I realised that they don’t value my talent but my body, which I was only flaunting as part of branding. It ended up hurting me because that is all they were seeing,” she said.
